Megaways™ Slots Explained

With the spreading of the Game of Thrones video slot fever, came the success of the 243 pay-lines. This paying mechanism is included in many Microgaming’s slots. Game of Thrones uses the standard 5-reeled x 3 rows grid but offers 243 ways to win. This exceeds the maximum of 100 pay-lines which slots with fixed bet-ways provide. We can consider this super-hit, themed after the popular TV series, the predecessor of the Megaways™ slots. The latter is one of the most popular and successful machines nowadays. Its creator is the Australian provider Big Time Gaming.

The year was 2016 when the brand released its first Megaways™ slot Bonanza. The game was a great success and is considered on the same level as super-hits such as Guns’n Roses, Divine Fortune, Dead or Alive, Jack and the Beanstalk. At the moment the Megaways™ technology is gaining more popularity at high speed. It is at the top of the trend in the gaming industry. The fact that Ladbrokes created a designated tab with Megaways™ slots speaks for itself. Let’s dive deeper into this unique game-changing system to see what makes it so successful and unique.

Characteristics of the Megways slots

Here are some of the main features that make Magaways slot games stand out:

  • High volatility video slots
  • The win ways pay from left to right
  • The number of symbols per reel varies usually from 2 to 7
  • The win ways number per spin also vary between less than 1.00 to reaching hundreds and thousands of ways
  • Each spin is independent and has a different and unpredictable number of win ways
  • The outcome and the win lines of each spin depends on the number of symbols landing on each reel – the more the better for the player
  • The video slot games are enhanced with plenty of extra features: stacked wilds, reel modifiers, buy features, scatters, free spins, gambling features, unlimited increasing multipliers, mystery symbols, etc.

These are some of the unique features, typical for video slot using the Megaways™ system. They guarantee much more action and chances to get large sums compared to slots with fixed win lines.

How Do Megaways™ Slots Work?

To make sure that you know and understand how does the system work, we will explain it. We will illustrate the way these numerous win ways form using slots with 6 and 7 reels. As we mentioned, Microgaming’s Game of Thrones is the predecessor of the Megaways system. It utilizes the 243 bet-ways. With each spin on the game, you can land an unpredictable number of win ways. This is dependent entirely on the number of reels the game has and on the number of symbols which each reel holds.

The larger the number of reels and symbols per reel you get, the better the chances for forming paying combinations you stand. For the moment we have noticed that the majority of Megaways™ slots are 6-reeled. The win ways are predominantly 117,649. Of course, there are exceptions. Such are popular games like Holy Diver, Primal, Flower Fortunes, and some others.

Let’s explain the formation of pay-lines with an example to illustrate it better. If a slot has 117,649 Megaways™ it must have up to 7 symbols on each reel and 6 reels in total. The number of win ways on each reel is 7 as is the largest number of symbols that can land per reel. We multiply the number of symbols which form a paying combination on the 1st reel by their number on the 2nd one. In the best case, 7 symbols per reel form a winning combination. So, 7×7=49 (7 symbols on a pay-line on the 1st reel x 7 symbols on a pay-line on the 2nd reel).

We multiply the symbols on reel 2 and reel 3:49×7=343. We go on the same way for reel 3 and 4:343×7=2,401. The same rules for reels 4 and 5:2,401×7=16,807. Considering that the slot has 6 reels, we have to multiply the paying symbols on the reels 5 and 6:16,807 x 7=117,649. This is how we got this large number of win ways which makes the Megways system similar to jackpots. Now it should be clear that the larger number of reels and symbols per reel grant more winning ways. They also guarantee better chances to get larger and oftener payouts.

The same year Storm Gaming and Red Tiger Gaming obtained their Megaways™ licenses. The Estonian software developer Relax Gaming got its license the next year. The first slot using the Megaways™ system to appear in iGaming from this provider is Machina. In April 2019 it was followed by Temple Tumble. We expect more new slot from Relax Gaming in the coming months. The brand tends to release a large number of games in short periods.

NextGen Gaming also acquired RTG license and in 2019 released Medusa Megaways™ slot. Kalamba Games, SG Gaming, 7 Mobile Gaming, and many other brands specialized in creating slots received their Megaways license in 2019. For the moment 34 video slots are using the Megaways™ mechanics. Their number is constantly growing. The number of game providers getting a BTG license gradually increase, too. Most of the games using this technology offer the maximal 117,649 ways to win. There are also slots with 46,656 and 15,625 pay-lines as well.

Comparison Between Slots with Fixed Pay-lines and Slots using the Megaways™ System

You can find slot games with 10, 20, 40, and even 100 fixed and adjustable pay-lines. The more the better, but the problem with them is the fact that for each win line you have to pay a coin to activate it. Thus, it makes it expensive for the player to have all win-lines activate. Especially if you are aiming at the jackpots, you are required to play with all lines active. Most of the games have fixed pay-lines. According to their number, you will use the relevant bet amount per spin. To take advantage of all the slot’s extra features and bonuses you have to play with a larger bet size but this is expensive.

With the introducing of the ‘Ways to Win’ type of slots, you don’t need any patterns of symbols to form a combination. You only need matching symbols on adjacent reels landing from left to right to form a win. With the classic 5-reeled on 3 rows grid, getting a win on any possible position means 3 on 1st reel x3 on the 2nd reel x3 on the 3rd reel x3 on the 4th reel x3 on the 5th reel. This is how the famous 243 win ways appeared and function. By introducing the paying both ways upgrade to the game, the designers double the win ways to 486.

The 1024 win ways form by adding a 4th row to the 5-reeled grid and 4x4x4x4x4 makes this possible. By adding the win both ways extra to the game you get 2048 win ways. The Megaways™ system was created inspired by this evolution of the pay-lines. It was only enhanced with a few extras. Big Time Gaming added 6 vertical reels and one extra horizontal reel above. These, with the varying number of symbols landing per reel on each spin, create unexpected outcomes. This is how the 6 digit win ways have been made possible. So, you have an unpredictable number of winning combinations on each of your spins. They change every new round.

Besides the 6-reeled grid, many of the Megaways™ slots include an extra horizontal top reel. It usually holds 4 symbols. On each spin, you can get from 2 to 7 symbols per reel and the gameplay is very dynamic. This setting is like jackpots active on each spin for the players. The win ways vary according to the number of reels and can be up to 117,649 per spin. These video slots include bonus features and games which increase your chances to win even more.
